SEO is one of the most profitable acquisition channels for any business, but also one where the most mistakes are made unknowingly. Here are the 10 most common errors I see on SME websites and how to fix them.

1. Duplicate title tags and meta descriptions

Each page must have a unique and descriptive title. Having the same title on multiple pages confuses Google and dilutes your authority. Fix: audit your titles with Google Search Console and make them unique for each URL.

2. No mobile optimization

Google has used Mobile-First Indexing since 2021. If your site looks bad on mobile, it won't rank well on any device. Fix: mobile usability test in Google Search Console.

3. Slow loading speed

A website that takes more than 3 seconds loses 53% of mobile visitors before loading. Fix: compress images, use caching, remove unnecessary plugins in WordPress.

4. Thin or low-quality content

Pages with 100–200 words don't rank. Google wants content that thoroughly answers search intent. Fix: minimum 500 words per page, with clear structure (H2, H3, lists).

5. Keywords not in the right places

The main keyword should be in the H1 title, in the first 100 characters of text, in at least one H2, in the meta description, and in the URL.

6. Unfriendly URLs

URLs like /page?id=123 don't help SEO or users. Fix: use descriptive URLs like /services/web-renting instead of /p=45.

7. No HTTPS

In 2026 having a site without SSL is unforgivable. Google penalizes HTTP sites and browsers mark them as «not secure». Fix: install a free SSL certificate (Let's Encrypt or included with your hosting).

8. No internal linking

Internal links distribute authority across your site and help Google understand structure. Fix: link related pages from content, especially to your most important service pages.

9. Google Search Console not configured

If you don't have Search Console, you're flying blind. It's free and tells you exactly which words generate impressions and clicks. Fix: set it up today at search.google.com/search-console.

10. Ignoring local SEO

If you have a business with a physical location or serve a specific geographic area, local SEO is essential. Fix: optimize your Google Business Profile and create content mentioning your city or region.
