When someone searches Google for «plumber in London» or «café near me», the first thing they see is the Google Map Pack: that block of 3 businesses with a map that appears before any organic result. To be there you need to have and optimize your Google Business Profile.

How to claim or create your listing

Go to business.google.com, sign in with a Google account, and search for your business. If it already exists, claim ownership. If not, create it from scratch. You'll need to verify it with a postcard or phone call.

The fields that most impact local ranking

Business name

Use your real business name. Don't add keywords artificially: Google can suspend listings with manipulated names.

Primary category

This is the most important factor. Choose the most specific category that defines your business. You can add secondary categories for additional services.

Description

500 characters to convince both the algorithm and the user. Include your city, main services, and a clear value proposition. Naturally include 2–3 relevant keywords.

Hours

Keep hours always updated, including holidays. Listings with outdated hours lose trust and ranking.

Photos

Listings with more than 10 photos receive 520% more calls than those with fewer than 10. Upload photos of the premises, team, products, and work process. Update regularly: Google values recent activity.

Reviews strategy

  • Create a direct link for leaving a review (in Maps, share profile → Request reviews)
  • Send it via WhatsApp or email after each completed service
  • Always respond to all reviews, positive and negative
  • Never buy reviews: Google detects them and can remove your entire listing

Weekly posts

Google Business allows publishing news, offers, and events directly on your listing. Listings that post weekly gain greater visibility. Spend 10 minutes a week posting a news item or tip.
